The international conference PlantACT! 2025, organized by the Center for Plant Biotechnology and Genomics (CBGP UPM-INIA/CSIC) and held April 7-9 at the School of Agricultural, Food and Biosystems Engineering (ETSIAAB) of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), exceeded all expectations. More than 300 scientists, policy makers, young researchers and private sector players gathered to exchange solutions based on plant science with the aim of mitigating the effects of climate change and guaranteeing food production in the future.

Research presented included advances in plant biotechnology, soil microbiomes, and applications of artificial intelligence in sustainable agriculture.

The presentations by leading scientists such as Heribert Hirt, Gloria Coruzzi and Fernando Valladares aroused great interest, as did the flash talks by young researchers. Also noteworthy was the success of the science communication workshop, which reinforced the need to train scientists capable of connecting with society and political decision-makers.

This anthropogenic climate change is already associated with altered rainfall patterns, extreme weather events and less predictable seasonal patterns, which are expected to increase non-linearly in the future. This is a major challenge to crop production and therefore to food security and human society. Agriculture is a victim of climate change but also a culprit since 20-25% of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) are released through agricultural activities. Without a substantial diet change, the growing world population will require a 70-100% increase of agricultural productivity by 2050 to produce enough food and this must be achieved in a sustainable manner without compromising nutritional quality. Furthermore, this must be done in a context of decreasing GHG emissions and increasing C-sequestration to help mitigate global climate change. This will require resilient, higher yielding crops having a more efficient use of water and minerals, and suited to climate-change adapted cultivation schemes and practices. Moreover, laboratory/researcher practices will also have to be modified to accommodate low energy-use/low C-footprint research activities.

In this context, the SPS Summer School 2024 will focus on introducing and discussing strategies, techniques and practices to carry out next generation plant research aimed at improving sustainable climate-change friendly plant productivity.

The summer school will bring together outstanding and enthusiastic young scientists (PhD students and young post-docs) and high-level researchers from all over the world in order to exchange knowledge and ideas. It is limited to a small group of participants (20 maximum) to privilege informal interactions and scientific discussions.

This alarming trend portends catastrophic consequences, particularly in the realm of agriculture. Each degree Celsius increase correlates with an approximate 10% reduction in crop yields. Should this trajectory persist, we anticipate losing a staggering one-third of our food and feed production by 2100.

Consequently, plant science solutions are not merely relevant; they are central to addressing this multifaceted challenge. Yet, the global community lacks a cohesive strategy to tackle this pressing issue effectively.

In response to this critical gap, several esteemed members of the scientific community have collaborated to establish the PlantACT! initiative. This groundbreaking effort aims to unite leading plant experts to formulate realistic, actionable solutions and recommendations. We acknowledge the enormity of the challenge at hand and recognize that the field of plant science alone may not suffice to navigate such complexities. However, it is imperative to initiate action, and leveraging our expertise in plant biology provides a foundational starting point. Our goal is to generate innovative ideas and solutions, which can subsequently be refined and validated through interdisciplinary collaboration.

To solidify and expand upon the strategic plan recently developed and published by PlantACT!, we are excited to announce the inaugural PlantACT! conference. This event is scheduled for 10-13 March 2023 in Düsseldorf and promises to be a pivotal gathering for forward-thinking discourse and collaboration.

Although the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had set the goal of limiting global warming to less than 1.5°C, this goal is not possible to hold any more. Therefore, achieving climate neutrality is more important than ever, by reducing net CO2 emissions to zero through a 45% reduction in emissions within 10 years.
